Frequently Asked Questions
Due to COVID restrictions, all concerts are now "live streaming" in 2021.
Q. How long has St. Philip’s Friends of Music been in existence?
A. We have been presenting concerts featuring local, national and internationally-recognized musicians for over two decades.
Q. Is St. Philip’s Friends of Music a non-profit organization?
A. We are a separately operating committee within St. Philip’s In The Hills Episcopal Church, which is an IRS-approved 501(c)(3) corporation. The St. Philip’s Friends of Music mission is musical, ecumenical and inclusive.
Q. Where do you find your performers?
A. Our artists come to us from a variety of sources. Our Artist Committee is comprised of knowledgeable people who network with their friends and colleagues to identify candidates. Some candidates (we wish more!) submit their own proposals via the online portal on our web site. Candidate performers undergo a structured vetting process that may include recorded auditions. We strive to balance our programs to cover a variety of instruments, ensembles and personalities, including new local artists, long-time local favorites, plus emerging and veteran performers from around the country.
Q. Where can I find out more information about concerts?
A. You can request a season brochure by calling us, submitting an electronic request on this web site, or completing a paper interest form at one of our concerts. Our local phone number is (520) 222-7277. Please invite your friends to visit our web site at www.friendsofmusictucson.org or search on Facebook for St. Philip’s Friends of Music, Tucson. You can also look for articles about upcoming events in local print, online, cable and broadcast news and entertainment outlets.
Q. What are the admission fees for concerts?
A. Our suggested admission is $20 for Regular Series events and $10 for Lenten Series. Students with ID are complimentary. Special ticketed events are priced separately. Our activities receive many forms of support but not fiscal underwriting from St. Philip’s Church. We believe our mission includes providing premier, live, musical performances to anyone who wants to attend. We suggest that concert patrons contribute whatever they feel they can afford. A few of our events are specific fundraisers with somewhat higher suggested admission.
Q. What forms of payment at concerts do you accept?
A. We accept cash, check or credit/debit cards (Visa, Master Card, Discover and American Express). We appreciate your checks completed in advance if possible. Simply write your desired amount to "St. Philip's In The Hills" and place "Friends of Music" on the memo line.
Q. Why don’t you sell tickets in advance online?
A. We do occasionally for very large productions but for standard events we feel that our full mission is served better by offering one level of seating available to all comers via door sales the day of the concert.
Q. Why are some events “ticketed” or more expensive than others?
A. We sometimes need to make early purchases for an upcoming concert. To provide our audiences an opportunity to hear performances of exceptional caliber, tickets are sometimes sold in advance to cover music royalties, some artists’ fees or travel reservations. Some concerts benefit a specific activity such as music and academic education for at-risk youth. We use care to limit the number of higher-priced events in any one concert season.
Q. Where is St. Philip’s Church?
A. St. Philip’s Church is located at the northeast corner of Campbell Avenue and River Road in Tucson. The street address is 4440 North Campbell Avenue.
Q. Are concerts inside or outside?
A. All our concerts are inside, either in the church sanctuary or Bloom Music Center. Signs direct patrons from parking areas to the concert venue. Both the sanctuary and Bloom Center are warm in winter and very cool during summer.
Q. What about wheelchairs or walkers?
A. St. Philip’s Church is fully ADA-compliant. All St. Philip’s Friends of Music concerts have ushers who can help guide patrons to seating areas and take care of temporary stowage of walkers.
Q. Are seats comfortable?
A. As at many historical and architecturally beautiful churches, the wooden pews in St. Philip's sanctuary are original to the building and were specifically designed to complement the Joesler architecture of a building listed on the National Register of Historic Places. For your comfort, St. Philip’s Friends of Music seating cushions are available for use or you are welcome to bring your own. The chairs in the Bloom Music Center feature padded seats and backs.
Q. Is it easy to find parking?
A. Parking at St. Philip’s is plentiful and conveniently located on the north and east sides of the campus. Some handicap-marked parking spaces are located next to the church building on the southeast side of the campus. More handicap-marked parking spaces are located just to the east of the shaded plaza with the fountain. Shaded parking is available under the solar panels in the East Lot.
Q. Is Friends of Music involved with any other activities, in addition to providing concerts?
A. St. Philip’s Friends of Music strives to be the cornerstone of many events and missions within and outside St. Philip's In The Hills Church. St. Philip’s Friends of Music helps fund an After School Music Program which provides music theory, piano, violin and choral training to underserved children from public schools in the surrounding community. St. Philip's In The Hills is one of the very few churches in the country that teach the Royal School of Church Music curriculum consistently to all its children’s choirs. St. Philip’s Friends of Music supports with scholarships and grants to music camps. In addition, many of our board members are actively involved in other community organizations, such as the Tucson Girls Chorus, Tucson Music Teachers Association and the University of Arizona School of Music Advisory Board.
