First Sunday Music 2015-2016This series brings the unique experience of classical music into a liturgical setting with our choirs, usually accompanied by a chamber orchestra. We are blessed to have dedicated volunteers and staff to lead you through our entire season filled with great music! St. Philip’s In The Hills doors are open to all. An offering opportunity is provided.
All First Sunday services are held at 9:00 AM and 11:15 AM, unless stated otherwise. Preludes frequently begin five to ten minutes prior to the announced service time. |

Better known as the “Lord Nelson Mass,” the music is packed with drama and energy and will transport our worship experience.

Rutter’s Requiem will bring joy on All Saint’s Sunday. We are especially delighted that Thomas Cockrell, UA’s Nelson Riddle Endowed chair and past interim Director of Music at St. Philip’s, guest-conducts.

• Cantata BWV 61 Nun Komm der Heiden Heiland by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)
• Magnificat by Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741)
Our new church season opens with the music by two of the greatest Baroque masters. The Bach cantata sets the mood of faithful waiting that Advent encourages. The Magnificat highlights quiet joy and sense of coming celebration.

DECEMBER 24, 2015 AT VARIOUS AFTERNOON & EVENING TIMES
Cherub Choir (Children’s Choir), St. Nicholas Choir (Youth Choir) and Schola Cantorum (Advanced youth choir with adults) will lead 3:30PM, 5PM, and 7PM Services, respectively. The 7PM service takes the Lessons and Carols format. At 9PM and 11PM, the adult choirs and youth apprentices will present Mass in G by Franz Schubert with chamber orchestra and more festive carols for choir and congregation.

Estonian composer Arvo Pärt brings a different dimension to the Mass, far removed from what we are used to. Monastic bells ringing in peaceful surroundings create a meditative atmosphere.
Mass in G – Francis Poulenc (1899-1963)
MARCH 6, 2016 AT 9AM & 11:15AM
During Lent we experience a rarely performed work by Poulenc that shows the composer’s clear interests in chants and the older music of J.S. Bach. Canterbury Choir and Apprentices will present one of the most daring and challenging choral works in the literature.
Holy Week Music
Different choirs of the St. Philip’s Music ministry, selected to match the mood of each day, lead special services throughout Holy Week.

On Holy Wednesday Canterbury Choir and Canterbury Apprentices present sacred choral works including Miserere by Allegri.
MARCH 24, 2016 (MAUN DY THURSDAY) AT 7PM
On Thursday the Sopranos and Altos from adult choirs lead the Maundy Thursday Service.
MARCH 25, 2016 (GOOD FRIDAY) AT NOON
On Good Friday instrumental & vocal soloists present reflective music in a 3-hour service beginning at Noon.
MARCH 26, 2016 (VIGIL SATU RDAY) AT 7PM
On Holy Saturday St. Nicholas and Schola Cantorum lead a liturgically moving Easter Vigil service with festive Easter Anthems.
MARCH 27, 2016 (EASTER SUNDAY) AT 9AM & 11:15AM
& AT 9:15AM, Children’s Center Courtyard
On Easter Sunday the week of renewal opens with resounding festival services in the Sanctuary featuring Brass and Organ. The Children’s Choir and Brass will also lead an outdoor service.

This season our St. Philip’s Day celebration journeys into fresh territory to honor our earth and all its creatures. It includes the usual movements of Kyrie and Agnus Dei but also incorporates calls from wolf, whale and other creatures to highlight God’s gift of the earth.
